Ms. Skonieczny's class loves to Go Noodle, Ninja style! Go Noodle is a fantastic researched-based site that helps kids get their wiggle with activities that are healthy for the body, engaging for the mind, and beneficial to the brain in specific ways that help students stay focused and get ready to learn. Did you know you can Go Noodle at home for free too? Happy Go Noodling!
BPE 5th graders started their speeches this week for their chance to be apart of our amazing Student Council. After speeches were given, students used their iPads to vote using Google Forms. To make sure each student only voted once and for their homeroom only, 5th graders had to sign in using their Google credentials and we used the Go to Page Based on Answer feature of Google Forms. Way cool, best of luck to all of our Student Council candidates!

Spring is in the air and moms were everywhere! BPE 5th graders worked hard to create special Mother's Day books using the Mixbook website. Students wrote their memoirs using the Pages App or Google Docs and then logged onto computers to create their masterpieces. At the Mother's Day Tea, 5th graders proudly presented their memoirs to their mothers.

Bridge Point students in kindergarten through 5th grade really dazzled a crowd of educators this week as a part of the iLeap Academy run by our school district. Kindergartners in Ms. Skonieczny's class impressed our visitors with their abilities to use QR codes, access You Tube videos, practice sight words and work independently to email their parents their work. See her lesson plan here. A remark from one visitor, "When she [Ms. Skonieczny] told the kids to screenshot their sight words and email it to their parents, I about passed out!"

Not to be outdone, 3rd graders in Ms. Cimino's class went about their daily learning utilizing the multifaceted learning tools of the iPad. Students were engaged in creating presentations, making inferences, evaluating commercials and setting up cupcake shops to learn more about great ways to run a business and the concept of free enterprise. See her lesson plan here. When in this room, a visitor said, "Wow! This room is so comfortable, I want to stay here all day to learn!"

The visit ended with a distinguished panel of 1st-5th grade Bridge Point students giving their points-of-view of how iPads help them learn. When asked about their favorite App, a 4th grader stated, "I like Motion Math's Cupcake Edu because it helps us to learn more about personal financial literacy." When asked what would school be like without iPads, another 4th grader gasped and said, "Geez, I'd rather stay home all day!" View a little of one of our student panel sessions here and hear more out of the mouths of babes. Just another great day to be at Bridge Point Elementary!
May is all about getting caught doing your best and showing that you are a Bridge Point All Star! Check out this video and learn more about getting an All Star Star to put up on our Life Skills board.

Happy days are here again! Students have been cleared to complete a long overdue update for their iPads. Our local servers cache the update to help our iPads update quicker. To see how to update your student iPad please view the short video above and make your iPad happy! Why so happy? We are happy because, with this update, students will no longer need to put in their Apple ID password for each and every app delivered to them. Input one and they're done! Happy day!
What's even better than reading a book? How about a reading a talking book that records your voice, quizzes you and gives you points for reading? RAZ Kids is an awesome subscription based resource for students to build their literacy skills through access to thousands of non-fiction and fiction leveled readers. Teachers can differentiate instruction by assigning students different books and can even listen to their students recordings. Now that is a RAZzle dazzle way to make reading engaging!
Nothing beats using your brain to think! Blend thinking with tinkering and you get some major Think-Tinkering! While BPE classroom teachers were engaged in the PLC process this week, Ms. Ricketson-Husain and Ms. Medina seized the opportunity to sneak into classrooms and teach a little bit more about computer programming. They challenged students to use their critical thinking skills and logical reasoning skills by letting kids Think-Tinker with several different apps and programs. BPE students learned more about programming with these apps: Robo Logic 2 HD lite, Scratch Jr., Cargo Bot, Kodable, Run Marco!, Bee Bot, Lego Mindstorms Fix It Factory, Tynker, and Hopscotch. Online activities from the Hour of Code initiative were also used: Angry Birds Coding, Frozen Challenge, Flappy Bird Challenge. Happy Think-Tinkering!

At our morning assembly today, we had the great pleasure of meeting Drew Karakourtis, 20 year-old brother of Becca Grace Karakourtis who is a BP 4th grader. This morning with EISD parent, Mike McDonnell, he informed our students of the I CARE FOR RARE awareness day at the Capitol on Saturday. Drew, who has a rare progressive disease (just 350 cases nationwide), will continue his initiative to inform the public about the many rare diseases that receive relatively little or no attention, funding, research effort, pharmacological curiosity or entrepreneurial support. Drew is a courageous advocate who wishes to raise awareness of Rare Diseases and increase sensitivity as we live among those who are afflicted or affected by them. To raise awareness and support of his initiative, Bridge Pointers are encouraged to wear denim tomorrow and will be given a blue ribbon to wear home.

Third graders in Ms. Powell's and Ms. Cimino's class decided to take indoor recess to a new level today! Using GoNoodle their kids participated in a video to release endorphins and get their students' blood flowing. Nothing improves mood and cognition like getting up and moving around! Don't fret, GoNoodle also has deep breathing activities to calm down a class as well. Kitty Hi-Five!
There isn't anything like it anywhere else in the world! Bridge Point's stop-drop-and-do Science Day is a spectacular event that makes science sizzle, pop, bang, explode, bubble and whinny its way into the minds of 750 students. Take a look at this video recap of some of the amazing hands-on learning events of BPE Science Day created by Dan Nguyen, Bridge Point parent. The slideshow features two popular songs, Rather Be by Clean Bandit and Count on Me by Bruno Mars.
Hey Bridge Point, it's all about the books! Take the Bookspring reading challenge and be an All-Star Reader! The annual Bookspring READ-A-THON kicked off on Monday 1/26/15 & will continue for 2 weeks until 2/6/15. Packets of information went home with all students on Thursday, 1/22. Get those books ready! This is a great opportunity for our students to get pledges for reading and the funds generated go directly to help other schools in our community get much needed books! All students must register online to be eligible for Read-A-Thon prizes. Contact Sherry Deitrick, [email protected] or Christina Utkov,

Struggling with the ever-mounting piles of lost and found items in our hallway, BPE's Student Council delivered a message to the student body via a song they wrote in the style of Beyoncè hit song, If You Like It.

This week, Bridge Pointers tall and small worked to challenge their minds to demystify the world of computer programming. Every Bridge Pointer had the chance to join the largest learning campaign in the history of the world to promote Computer Science Education. A team of BPE teachers rotated through every classroom at BPE to teach a variety of computer programming lessons. On Tuesday, with the entire world trying out the Hour of Code, their servers crashed and we had to do some finagling. Luckily we had a team of great teachers on hand!

Ms. Gerentine and Ms. McLaughlin helped students bring coding to life through several "Unplugged" activities such as Happy Maps and Graph Paper Programming. Ms. Medina and Ms. Ricketson-Husain also traveled through classrooms introducing the Hour of Code with the Move It, Move It challenge, the Frozen challenge, Angry Birds basic programming challenge, and introductions to Scratch Jr. and Cargo Bot for the iPad. Fourth graders were invited to a second challenge in the computer lab to learn more about Javascript through Khan Academy. Immersed in challenges both online and offline, our Bridge Pointers rose to the challenge to learn more about computer programming! Way to go BPE!
