Plagiarism is really bad, it can get the teachers really mad! Ms. Mojica's 5th grade language arts students are delving deep into the process creating a quality research paper which includes understanding plagiarism, copyright, and paraphrasing. To learn more about how to avoid common pitfalls in the research process, check out the videos above and this presentation by our talented 5th graders.

Ms. Rollins' 4th grade went on a learning adventure as they hunted down literary elements of poetry. Ms. McLaughlin began the lesson with a discussion and Ms. Husain introduced the concept of visual note-taking. Then the detective work began! Students used their iPads to take pictures of the literary elements of poetry that they found lurking inside of the many books Ms. McLaughlin hauled in from the library. Students were encouraged to use any app they had on their iPads. Most of the students chose to use Keynote, Notability, Popplet or Pages, super detective work 4th graders!

Peruvians and Haitians are really alike because they both eat really different things. Peruvians eat guinea pigs and Haitians eat cats and goats. Peruvians and Haitians both don't eat very many American foods. When we asked the Peruvian kids what they ate most of it wasn't hamburgers or pizza! That surprised us the most! The Peruvian kids that we Skyped with were wearing hats because you can get easily sunburned when you live up high in the mountains. Haitians speak Kreyol, and Peruvians speak Quechua and Spanish. There are a lot of animals in Haiti and Peru. In Peru it is summer right now and it's about 80 degrees! Haiti and Peru are similar in a lot of ways and we can't wait to Skype with them again! By Kade and Wyatt Nothing beats professional learning that comes straight from our homegrown expert teachers at Bridge Point Elementary! January 20th's inservice was designed with just that in mind. We had the opportunity to learn about various technology integration topics from our own teachers and district educational technology leaders who live and breathe technology integration daily. Giving teachers some time to absorb and apply what they are learning really helps them to put it into practice.
![]() Today's hAPPy Friday is brought to you by Barton Creek's Ed Tech, Juan Orozco. Nearpod allows teachers to construct presentations using the Nearpod website and deliver instruction to students by pushing content out to multiple devices at once. The teacher controls the presentation from a master iOS device, while students follow along on a class set of iPads or iPods. To enliven instruction, teachers can also embed multiple choice questions, polls, videos, quizzes, open-ended questions, and web-links in their presentations. See an App Integration Snapshot and a video on Nearpod to help you get started. Thanks Juan! Nowadays it's so simple to whip out your phone and take an impromptu video of something that happens around you! Much to BPE's surprise, 5th graders shared what they were learning about in their music classes and Ms. Williamson was able to capture it on her phone!
Rooted in the competitive dance rituals practiced from traditionally African-American sororities and fraternities, Stepping is a form of expressive dance that involves using the body as an instrument. It includes hand claps, voice and foot stomps. BPE 5th graders celebrated this tradition by creating their own dance led by our awesome music teachers, Ms. Hatch and Ms. Revering. ![]() This week's hAPPy Friday App is iMotion HD, brought to you by Janet Couvillion, EdTech at Forest Trail Elementary. iMotion HD is fun timelapse and stop-motion app. It can be used to photograph cloudscapes, plants growing, crowds and whatever you can think of! Check out Ms. Ward's ABCs Around BPE and Ms. King's King-Sized ABCs Book.
Ms. Steimle and Ms. DeLuca's class had great fun learning from their new Haitian friends in Neply again today. Over Skype, BP students and students in Neply shared their holiday traditions and special treats that were exclusive to the holiday season. We spoke of gingerbread houses, special dinners and presents. They spoke of their New Year's celebration of cooking pumpkin soup and traveling with small gifts to homes of their family and friends. It's amazing how patient, respectful and attentive each group of students are as they wait for each other's words to be translated into Kreyol and English. We ended our connection today by singing Jingle Bells in English and Kreyol. Happy Holidays!
![]() In recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906), the Hour of Code challenge was born. Its mission is to raise awareness and excitement for computer programming. With a goal of inspiring 10 million kids to code during Computer Science Education Week (December 9-15), Bridge Point decided to get pumped about coding too! The entire 4th grade took the middle school Javascript challenge and 3rd graders in Ms. Cimino and Ms. Crowley's class took the beginner challenge. Many of the 3rd graders finished all 20 challenges! Kindergartners in Ms. Skonieczny, Ms. Hester, Ms. Ward and Ms. Plevich's classes also participated in the beginner challenge with some help from 3rd grade leaders. Students challenged themselves to learn from mistakes and to persevere. Our favorite quote of the day from a Kindergartner was, "I'm a master at this!" Maybe coding isn't just for the birds after all! ![]() Easily add labels and stamps to your photos with Labelbox. Check out the APP Integration Snapshot guide and enjoy! hAPPY Friday!! ![]() This month's Lifeskill is Caring and Compassion. Our first graders worked hard to create this video to the song, My Own Two Hands by Jack Johnson. This month a lot of Bridge Pointers are showing caring and compassion through a variety of activities. A team of Cub Scouts is holding a sock drive, the Yummy Gummies DI team is holding a coat drive and the student council is running the RexStrong fundraiser. If your teacher sees you showing care and compassion, you will earn a bear for our Lifeskills board. Happy December!
Fourth Graders in Ms Steimle and Ms. DeLuca's class shrunk a distance of over 1800 miles today as they connected with a group of students from Neply, Haiti using Skype. Our fourth graders began their study of Haitian culture from a connection with their classmate Kade, whose father has established a medical clinic in Haiti to serve the pediatric medical needs of the community. With his father's work in Haiti, his family established a friendship with a program in Haiti called My Life Speaks. Kade and his family presented to us a Power Point that taught us about the geography, lifestyle and customs of Haiti. Working with Missy Wilson of My Life Speaks, our students and their students came up with a list of things to share. Once the children connected via Skype, they swapped info about school days, summer activities, favorite foods and much more. Who'd of guessed everyone's favorite thing to do in summer was to go to camp! They taught each other how to sing the Happy Birthday song in English and in Haitian Kreyol. They taught us some common phrases their language and we reciprocated in English. The most important thing we learned is that we share many more similarities than differences. It sure is a small world after all! Ms. Skonieczny's BPE ABC book arrived today hot of the presses from Shutterfly. Ms. Skonieczny's kinders were bubbling over with pride as Ms. Skonieczny, Ms. McLaughlin, Ms. Husain and Ms. Medina unveiled their beautifully written and photographed hardbound ABC book. Like real writers, we celebrated their writing and photography with a book signing complete with alphabet cookies, yum!
![]() This week's hAPPy Friday APP is Popplet, the paid version. This version is on all of our elementary student iPads. With Popplet you can capture your ideas, sort them visually, and collaborate with others in real time. Students can plan their writing and organize their thoughts using this colorful mind-mapping app. The paid version also allows them to create more than one Popplet at a time. Check out the App Integration Snapshot from Margie Brown, VVE's EdTech. Ms. Plevich really makes science come a live in her classroom. From taking care of class pets to dissecting bones, her students learn in active and meaningful ways. Students use iPads to reinforce new science vocabulary. Using the free app Skitch students draw arrows and type labels on their own photos of actual plants. Want to learn more about Skitch? Take a look at last hAPPy Friday's app integration snapshot and you too can get "Skitchy" with it!
![]() From BPE's Student Council members Landry, Alex, and Madelene:This is Rex Ryan, he will be turning two years old and is very sick. He is part of the Eanes ISD Family and both his parents are administrators, his mother is the assistant principal at Eanes Elementary. His father, a former WRMS teacher, is an AP at Gorzycki middle school. Schools all over Austin are supporting Rex and his fight against cancer. It costs a lot of money to stay in the hospital and we want to help them pay for it. Student Council will be collecting orders for Rex Strong t-shirts, hoodies, and bracelets. Or you can do chores around the house to earn some extra money to donate. We will be taking orders or monetary donations starting tomorrow until Winter Break. For each donation students will have a crane hung in your honor and our goal is to get 1,000 cranes (We learned about this from BPE ARTS day) for a wish for Rex. Stay Calm and Rex Strong Yellow collection boxes for the RexStrong fundraiser are located in Ms. J. King's Kinder classroom, Ms. Iles' 1st grade, Ms. C. King's 2nd grade, Ms. Crowley's 3rd grade, Ms. Joseph's 4th grade and Ms. Mojica's 5th grade classroom. THANKS!!
