We met with 3rd and 4th grade teams today to discuss our iPad roll out. OUR TEACHERS are AMAZING!! They are ready, excited and willing to take on a steep learning curve! We discussed our student iPad contract, our intro lessons, intro schedule and addressed topics of concern. Sync/Charge stations are in and powered, way to go M&O department, thanks! The iPads will be here before we know it. --Marianna Husain and Sandy Medina

Today our homemade sync and charge stations were delivered to our classrooms. Here we will house, charge and sync student iPads each day. Thanks so much to BPE teachers who were so patient and quick to respond. Says Mr. Wirht the day after, "Installation of the charging stations came early and fast yesterday to 3rd, 4th, and team leaders. Thanks for your quick reaction." We are so thankful to have such wonderful teachers at BPE who are all so very excited about our impending LEAP program. THANKS to the Tech Services crew and EXTRA thanks to our teachers! Literature organizer can be found here, and more info about the Datamation charge stations can be found here.

BPE Takes its first L.E.A.P!

BPE Third and Fourth grade teachers joined Laura Wright from Eanes Elementary to hear her share her classroom management ideas and app curriculum. Here are a few of her ideas:

Earbuds:
  • NECESSARY!! Keep them plugged until the end of the day
  • Use two fingers plug in gently, keeps it from breaking off into the iPad audio plug
  • Helps manage outbursts from array of apps on  the iPad
iPad Gestures/Management:
  • Consider letting students randomly get their iPads in the morning to avoid traffic jams
  • GRAB ("the claw"=closing app) + CLOSE (the cover)
  • GRAB+FLIP (close app, close cover and flip it onto your holder, cover side down so there is no temptation to sneak a peek at your iPad)
  • Consider using Class Dojo to earn "technology management" points for positive reinforcement, app available as well
  • iPad notepads
  • Use the Everyday Math online textbook, take screenshots and use in Doodle Buddy to do worksheets

  • As cheesy as it sounds, consider asking kids to NOT bring cheesy or sticky snacks to school to help keep the iPads clean, no water bottles on desks-go to the water fountain
  • Shenanigan timers-use sand timers (one per kid)  to help kids manage their time while exploring apps that just might be full of shenanigans
  •  BookZup text book holder makes and excellent iPad holder whether landscape or portrait viewing
  • Fully shutdown iPads only on Fridays
  • 2 kids are trained to plug in the iPads to charge
  • Share apps you use with parents
  • If you use the SHAKE to undo feature, encourage kids to count out loud-- SHAKE 1, 2, 3 or use assistive touch technology feature (Settings-General-Accessibility-AssistiveTouch
  • Use Doodle Buddy or Glow Draw as your math whiteboard (make sure there is an undo button so kids can step back instead of erasing the whole problem)
