In this creative writing science project, second graders in Ms. Ward's class used their newly acquired knowledge about Earth's satellite and their imaginations to write a story as if they were an astronaut flying to the moon. After reading many books about the moon, students used a graphic organizer to brainstorm their ideas for their imaginary rocket rides. That pre-writing activity led them to write rough drafts that they revised and edited with their peers and Ms. Ward. Students then took their final drafts and worked to read it aloud with expression, proper phrasing, and accuracy (otherwise known as reading fluency). Using the app, Shadow Puppet EDU, they recorded their reading, listened to it and re-recorded it until they were satisfied to publish. As a final touch, students emailed their work to Ms. Ward who then used Goo.gl to create QR codes for each student. If you are ready to fly to the moon, take a stroll down the second grade wing this week!
