hAPPy Friday, everyone! With the new school year came a new way to get apps for our student iPads. To help get to know some of these apps, the EISD EdTechs will feature an app on Fridays that's in Self-Service (our EISD version of the Apple App Store) with some ideas for curriculum integration. This Friday's app is Chatterpix Kids, a tool to make anything talk! Check out the App Integration Snapshot and watch the tutorial above for a quick start to using this app in your classroom.
We did it! BPE teachers and students rolled out over 700 brand new iPad 2 Airs since school started! Students enrolled their iPads into our new MDM system, signed email and iPad contracts, set up their email accounts, and became familiar with our new Eanes App Store through the Self-Service App that allows students to only download approved educational apps. WAY TO GO BRIDGE POINT!
BPE teachers can't wait to start this new school year! Thought you might like to see what they're up to when the kids aren't here!
A sneak peek from this morning's special assembly. Brad Wirht, you are the BEST PRINCIPAL EVER!!
Video includes the song, Gonna Fly Now by Bill ContiRepresenting that the journey of childhood comes to a beautiful crossroad full of possibilities, nearly 100 high school seniors stood proud and tall at this morning's assembly to share their successes. From Stanford to NYU, and even Argentina, our former BPE students wowed and impressed our students and staff. Best of luck Class of 2016!
Inspired by this blog post, 5th graders in Ms. Leavitt's Social Studies classes took a step back in time to retell the American Revolution as a Graphic Novel. Using a graphic novel from our newly upgraded Literacy Library called The Boston Tea Party as a model, her classes studied the features of a Graphic Novel. Her students learned a new style of note-taking called Sketch-Noting to record their learning. The notes served as a reminder of what they needed to incorporate in their project. After the students learned about Graphic Novels, they were assigned an event in the American Revolution. They then began the research phase of the project, utilizing textbooks, websites, library books and their own interactive journals. Students worked in small groups to summarize the main ideas on a flow chart. Next, they identified what would go into narrative boxes and how dialogue would support the story. Various storyboards were given to the student groups in order to plan out their Graphic Novel. Soon they were working on hand drawings for the panel layouts in the Book Creator app. Each class created a series of nine historical events written in a Graphic Novel style and uploaded them to their teacher using Showbie. Students were challenged through each stage of this creative, collaborative project to retell history using their own drawings, voice, and style. Beginning with a genre study of ABC books, kindergartners in Ms. Lunsford and Ms. Wright/Ms. Barnhart's classes became published authors! In their study, they used noticing charts to identify important parts of books or ways authors use illustrations, rhyming, color, bold text, or alliteration to tell a story.
The ABC book that inspired their writing, photography and amazing alphabet hunt was Alphabet City by Stephen Johnson. Each class used their iPads to photograph hidden letters on the walls, in the halls and in the play spaces of our beautiful school. Using the kindergartners' own photographs of hidden letters and their own sentences, each class created an ABC book using Shutterfly to publish them. Like real writers, we celebrated their writing and photography with a book signing complete with alphabet cookies, yum! Take a look at what happened when the Pigeon took over these 2nd graders stories from Ms. Smith, Ms. Mills and Ms. McMillin's classrooms! Ms. Rojas' 2nd graders help students battle their "Trash Thoughts" in order to help themselves to persevere! Perseverance is March's Lifeskill of the Month. In this creative writing science project, second graders in Ms. Ward's class used their newly acquired knowledge about Earth's satellite and their imaginations to write a story as if they were an astronaut flying to the moon. After reading many books about the moon, students used a graphic organizer to brainstorm their ideas for their imaginary rocket rides. That pre-writing activity led them to write rough drafts that they revised and edited with their peers and Ms. Ward. Students then took their final drafts and worked to read it aloud with expression, proper phrasing, and accuracy (otherwise known as reading fluency). Using the app, Shadow Puppet EDU, they recorded their reading, listened to it and re-recorded it until they were satisfied to publish. As a final touch, students emailed their work to Ms. Ward who then used Goo.gl to create QR codes for each student. If you are ready to fly to the moon, take a stroll down the second grade wing this week!
Ms. Hester's kindergarten class was introduced to a great K-2 subscription resource called Pebble Go! for internet research last week for a presidents project. Her students found it to be engaging and kindergarten friendly. Since then, her class looked up penguins because they had been reading about them in their Reading Street big book. When Ms. Hester told her class they could look up other animals at free choice centers, this little friend asked if she could have her iPad and a piece of paper to draw and write about what she learned! Way cool!
A big welcome to the newest member of our Bridge Point Tech team, Shawn Heffington. Mr. Heffington is assigned to BPE as a Support Specialist (a.k.a Tech Ninja) from the Tech Services department of EISD. Mr. Heffington is a native of Conway, Arkansas and he is a big fan of video games, mountain biking, reading, writing and, lucky for us, tinkering with iPads. We look forward to him helping us fix our computers, SMARTboards, sound systems, iPads, and and all things tech at Bridge Point! Extra! Extra! Read All About It! Bridge Point 4th Graders learn about writing feature articles! Their adventure began with a FaceTime discussion with Matt Watkins, a journalist from the Texas Tribune online newspaper. Mr. Watkins explained that a feature article can inform readers or tell a story that relates to others to make readers feel connected to the human perspective, current legislation, politics or news. In addition, a feature article might include interviews and persuasive writing either for or against a topic. According to Mr. Watkins, "The act of revising is the most important part of writing. The first version can look a lot different than the end. Read your piece out loud to others and watch their reaction while reading it to someone. That will help you write a better article." Mr. Watkins suggested using an inverted pyramid structure for writing the article, starting with a large "grabber" at the top and filling in the details below. Take a look at a few examples of our 4th graders' feature articles that they created with the built-in newsletter templates in their Pages app. Way to go 4th graders!
Big Bad Squirrels written by John Higgins and John Jacobson performed by BPE 2nd Grade.
They're BIG, they're BAD, they're SQUIRRELS! But wait! The last performance had the biggest, baddest squirrel of all, L.L. Cool K and and she stole the show! Over 130 BPE students performed, Nuts! The Musical this morning under the direction of our talented music teachers, Ms. Hatch and Ms. Revering. Amazing work, 2nd graders!
Ms. Skonieczny's Thoughtful Thursday activity made my day! This drawing was hand delivered to me by a kindergartner. It depicts me teaching among students holding iPads who are actively learning with me. Ms. Skonieczny, your ideas melt hearts and teach students what it really means to be thoughtful! Social emotional learning at its best!
Keyboarding Without Tears is a fantastic way for students to increase their keyboarding fluency from grades K-5. Students enjoy the interface and activities in the program. It works on a desktop, laptop and an iPad as well! The m
Bridge Point hosted yet another fabulous Science Day where students got the opportunity to learn from a wide variety of community members who really dig science. Here's glimpse into the awesomeness of a half day of hands-on science learning in a video created by parent Dan Nguyen. The video features the beautiful song, Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole.
Have you ever wanted to know how to build a Solar System in a Pizza Box? Well, here's your chance! Click the bubbles labeled 1-10 on the top "Thinglinked" image and you will get a look at how Ms. Price and Ms. Crowley's 3rd graders used the app Snap Guide to practice procedural writing in science class. There was glue, glitter, and happy faces everywhere!
Happy 100th day of school! BPE Kindergartners celebrated the 100th day of school imagining what it would be like to be 100 years old. Kinders dressed up and for extra fun, teachers used the Aging Booth App to make 5 year olds look more like 100 year olds!
BPE students hope you'll help support Drew Karakourtis and his cause to care about rare diseases. Please consider attending the BAND TOGETHER FOR A CURE fundraising event on Friday, February 26th at 7:30 PM to raise money for research and a cure for Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation (NBIA). Help Bridge Point Care About Rare!
Students in Ms. McMillin's 2nd grade class created their own drawings to explain their understanding of the water cycle. They then used Shadow Puppet EDU to record their voices and add animations to their drawings. It was their first time using Shadow Puppet EDU and they were excited to share their creations. What's so cool about this app is that it creates an online link so students can share their production with their teachers and family very easily. Here's a short tutorial that I made in case you want to make a Shadow Puppet too! The quote, Feedback is the Breakfast of Champions is fantastic way to think about how to help ourselves and others improve our work through collaborating and sharing feedback. Just like breakfast, it's an essential part of our day of learning! Our PE teachers took this quote to heart as they harnessed the power of the iPads during FitnessGram training. Students recorded their partners for various exercises and then worked together discuss how to improve their techniques based on the video that was recorded. What a fantastic way to utilize a technology tool to provide a quick and authentic opportunity to improve!
